Cotton is the underwear fabric almost everyone defaults to. It's soft, it's familiar, and "just wear cotton" is advice you've probably heard your whole life. So let's actually compare it to bamboo charcoal, fabric to fabric, and look at what each one is doing while you wear it all day.
Think About a Wet Gym Sock
You already know this one from experience. A cotton sock soaks up sweat at the gym and then just... stays wet. It gets heavy, cold, and uncomfortable, and it doesn't dry until you take it off and let it air out. That's cotton's whole deal: it absorbs moisture, but it doesn't release it. It just holds onto it.
Now picture that happening in your underwear, all day, every day.
What Cotton Actually Does
Cotton is absorbent, not moisture-wicking. There's a real difference. Absorbent fabric soaks up moisture and holds it against your skin until it eventually evaporates on its own, slowly. Moisture-wicking fabric pulls moisture away from your skin and moves it to the surface of the fabric, where it can evaporate much faster.
So when you sweat, or deal with normal daily discharge, cotton traps that moisture right where it started. That damp environment is exactly what odour-causing bacteria need to grow, which is why cotton underwear that felt fine at 8am can feel and smell different by 4pm.
What Bamboo Charcoal Does Differently
Bamboo charcoal is naturally porous at a microscopic level, which means it absorbs moisture fast and then releases it through evaporation instead of holding onto it. It also helps manage the bacteria that cause odour at the source, not just after the fact, by keeping moisture from building up in the first place.
Same job as cotton...deal with moisture...done in a way that doesn't leave you sitting in it.

A Quick, Honest Clarification About HUX
Since people ask: HUX isn't bamboo charcoal head to toe. The gusset...the part actually doing the moisture and odour work is our patented bamboo charcoal insert. The rest of the body is a nylon-spandex blend, on purpose. Bamboo charcoal is great at managing moisture, but it's not what gives a garment stretch and shape recovery. Nylon-spandex is what keeps the underwear anchored, stretching with you and holding its shape instead of riding up or rolling down through the day. Two materials, each doing the job it's actually good at...not one fabric trying to do everything.
You can read more about how the gusset technology works in Why Bamboo Charcoal in Underwear Actually Works.
So Is Cotton Bad?
Not bad...just not built for a full day of movement, sweat, or heat. Cotton is fine for short wear or low-activity days. But if you're on your feet for hours, working out, traveling, or just live somewhere warm, the gap between "absorbs" and "wicks" is the difference between feeling fresh at 5pm or not.
