Moisture in the underwear area comes from several sources: vaginal discharge (which is completely normal and healthy), sweat from the apocrine and eccrine glands in the groin, and general body heat that condenses against fabric throughout the day.
Odour follows moisture. When moisture sits against the skin and fabric without evaporating, bacteria proliferate and it's those bacteria, not the sweat or discharge itself, that produce odour. The longer moisture sits, the more opportunity bacteria have to multiply.
This means the key to managing both moisture and odour is the same: remove the moisture before bacteria have a chance to act on it.
Why Cotton Isn't the Answer
Cotton has long been recommended as the "breathable" choice for underwear and dermatologists frequently advise wearing cotton, particularly for anyone prone to yeast infections or irritation. Cotton is better than synthetic fabrics, that's true. But it's not the gold standard it's made out to be.
Cotton absorbs moisture — but then it holds it. When you sweat or experience discharge into a cotton gusset, that fabric becomes damp and stays damp. It doesn't evaporate efficiently, and it doesn't have any antimicrobial properties to manage the bacteria that cause odour.
The result is underwear that feels damp and may develop odour by midday, even if you started the morning feeling fresh.
The Gold Standard for Moisture-Wicking Underwear: Bamboo Charcoal
Bamboo charcoal works differently than cotton or synthetic fabrics in two crucial ways.
First, it wicks and releases. Bamboo fibres are highly porous at a microscopic level, pulling moisture away from the skin quickly. Unlike cotton, they don't then hold onto that moisture — instead, they facilitate evaporation, so the fabric returns to dry faster.
Second, it neutralizes odour at the source. Activated charcoal is widely used in water filtration, air purification, and medical settings for its ability to adsorb particles and impurities. Beyond Fabric: What Else Affects Moisture and Odour?
Gusset width and construction. The gusset — the crotch panel — is where moisture management matters most. A wider, better-constructed gusset in a moisture-wicking fabric does significantly more work than a narrow panel in standard fabric.
Fit. Underwear that gaps, bunches, or shifts creates areas where moisture pools instead of wicking away. A seamless, close-fitting cut keeps the fabric in contact with skin so moisture management can actually happen.
No fragrance. Scented underwear and panty liners can disrupt the natural vaginal pH, which ironically makes odour worse over time. You want odour control through material science, not perfume.
Ditching daily panty liners.
